Shikara rides on Dal Lake, alpine meadows at Gulmarg, and the pastoral valleys of Pahalgam — India's most breathtaking destination.
Kashmir needs no introduction — it is, and has always been, India's most celebrated landscape. Dal Lake shimmering at sunrise with snow-capped peaks in the distance, the meadows of Pahalgam carpeted in wildflowers, the alpine ski resort of Gulmarg standing at over 2,650 metres, the Mughal gardens designed by emperors who called this heaven on Earth. This 7-day circuit covers Kashmir's finest experiences in a comfortable, well-paced private itinerary — ideal for families, honeymooning couples and NRI guests returning to experience the valley. Direct flights to Srinagar are available from major Indian cities, making Kashmir more accessible than ever.
Direct flights to Srinagar (SXR) are available from Ahmedabad (approximately 2 hours), Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore — making Kashmir far more accessible than most guests expect. Atharva Travels handles all in-valley logistics, allowing you to simply arrive and experience the valley at its best.
Arrive at Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar. Meet and greet by our representative. Transfer to Dal Lake for check-in to your houseboat — these ornately carved cedar-wood houseboats are unique to Kashmir and are an experience in themselves. Afternoon Shikara ride on Dal Lake — glide past floating vegetable markets, lotus gardens and the snowcapped Zabarwan mountains that frame the lake. Sunset from the lake deck. Evening: explore the neighbouring Nagin Lake and Dal Boulevard. Overnight on houseboat, Dal Lake.
After a sunrise Shikara ride and breakfast on the houseboat, check out and transfer to your hotel in Srinagar. Morning: Mughal Gardens — Shalimar Bagh (Garden of Love, commissioned by Emperor Jehangir in 1619), Nishat Bagh (Garden of Bliss, the largest Mughal garden in Kashmir) and Chashme Shahi (the Royal Spring). Afternoon: Pari Mahal — the seven-terraced 17th century garden and observatory overlooking Dal Lake, built by Prince Dara Shikoh. Evening: stroll through old Srinagar — visit Khanqah-e-Maula mosque and the famous Srinagar Boulevard. Overnight in Srinagar.
Drive to Pahalgam (95 km, approximately 2.5 hours) through the Lidder Valley, passing saffron fields and apple orchards. Pahalgam sits at 2,130 metres at the confluence of streams from Sheshnag Lake and the Lidder River. Afternoon excursion to Betab Valley — a lush, forested valley named after the 1983 Bollywood film. Continue to Aru Valley — pristine alpine meadows where shepherds graze their flocks in summer, with snow peaks above. Optional horse or pony ride in the meadows. Overnight in Pahalgam.
Morning visit to Baisaran (mini Switzerland of India) — a wide open meadow ringed by dense pine forests at 2,440 metres, accessible only by pony or on foot (short trek). Return to Pahalgam for lunch. Afternoon at leisure — the Lidder River flowing through Pahalgam is excellent for trout fishing and riverside walks. Optional white-water rafting on the Lidder River (mild grade — suitable for families). Overnight in Pahalgam.
Drive from Pahalgam back through Srinagar and on to Gulmarg (56 km from Srinagar, approximately 1.5 hours). Gulmarg — which translates as 'Meadow of Flowers' — stands at 2,650 metres and is India's premier ski resort in winter and a breathtaking alpine meadow in summer. The headline experience here is the Gulmarg Gondola — Asia's highest cable car, which runs in two phases up to Apharwat Peak at 3,980 metres for panoramic views across the Kashmir Valley and the Nanga Parbat range beyond. Afternoon: explore the meadow, visit St. Mary's Church, and experience the wide-open snowfields above the gondola station (snow is typically present year-round at the upper station). Overnight in Gulmarg.
Drive back through Srinagar to Sonmarg (87 km from Srinagar, approximately 2.5 hours). Sonmarg — 'Meadow of Gold' — sits at 2,800 metres at the edge of the Himalayas, where the Kashmir Valley transitions into raw high-altitude terrain. Visit Thajiwas Glacier — a short pony or snow-scooter ride from the main meadow brings you to a glacier that is accessible throughout the summer season. The Sindh River rushing through Sonmarg is one of Kashmir's finest landscapes. Return to Srinagar for overnight stay.
Final morning in Srinagar. Visit Lal Chowk and the Polo View Market for last-minute Kashmiri shopping — pashmina shawls, saffron, walnuts, Kashmiri carpets and papier-mâché crafts are among the best souvenirs in India. Enjoy a final kehwa (Kashmiri green tea with saffron and almonds) before transfer to Srinagar Airport for your return flight.
